Long time no talk. I know it's been a few days. No excuse here though. The Mets are in yet ANOTHER series against the Altanta Braves. I feel like this is the 100th time they've played each other this year so far. Obviously, I know they're a part of the same division so they will be meeting a lot. This is the fourth series this season between these two teams and unfortunately not the last (two more to go). BUT at least this is part of a 10-game homestand because if I hear the sound of the Tomahawk Chop down in Atlanta one more time I'm gonna wanna cut off my own ears and eat them. THAT'S how much I hate the sound of that song. It reminds of an uprising or awakening of sorts.
Last night turned out to be another nail-biter (surprise, suprise) for Mets fans in what turned out to be another extra inning game for the Metsies. The team has played thirty-seven (I believe) extra innings which is the most this season out of all teams in Major League Baseball.
Daisuke Matsuzaka was on the mound and was able to pitch 7 fantastic innings, allowing a few hits here and there but no runs. In the bottom of the 3rd David Wright hit a HOMERUN which put the Mets in front 2-0 after a run was also scored in the second.
Fast forward to the 8th inning, Vic Black made a relief appearance and ended up giving a hit to Freddie Freeman. He was able to get two outs and then Josh Edgin was called in. Now, how does one do a boat-load of warming up in the bullpen and on the first pitch thrown on the mound, it's wild and brings in an Atlanta run. I won't ever comprehend. After getting ZERO out, Jenrry Mejia was brought out in hopes of achieving a four-out save with the score now 2-1 Mets.
No such actions occurred, unfortunately. Mejia gave up the go-ahead run to the Braves making the score at 3-2 Atlanta. But, have no fear! Curtis Granderson is here! Grandy exhibited the IDEAL clutch hit that this ball club was completely lacking. He launched a homerun to right and tied the game at three runs each.
Now here's where things get a little bit interesting. In the bottom of the 9th, Andrelton Simmons of the Braves attempted to turn a double play (he clearly was off of the base). Instead, what was initially called was something known as a "Neighborhood Play". I'm going to be completely honest that I had to look this up. I mean, you really don't hear it a lot. So for those of you who need one, here's the meaning behind it:
**excuse the near misspelling of the word 'receiving'...FAIL**
ANYWAY, the umpires came together and overturned a call that was allegedly "non-reviewable." This totally threw Braves manager Fredi Gonzales for a loop and as presumed, he came out from the dugout to argue the call. Of course, he was then thrown out, no shocker there.
After this little fiasco, Eric Young Jr. grounded out to end the 9th...extra innings here we come! In the bottom of the 11th Lucas Duda was clearly seen as a threat to the Braves so he was walked by Varvaro (take it like men Braves!). Ruben Tejada then came up to bat and what does he do?? BASE HIT up the middle to send Lagares home from second winning the game 4-3! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Ruben Tejada was last nights walk-off hero. The amount of nervousness and jitters could have been left out but we should all know the Mets very well by now. Good job boys! One down, three to go.
